Oblique and clarify is a technique that combines two types of offers to communicate a story element. A series of oblique offers imply the general idea, followed by a defined offer which makes it explicitly clear.
Player A implies a contextual element by making oblique offers. When Player B has an idea of what’s being implied, they clarify it by making a defined offer.
Two players play a scene in which Player A establishes the location using oblique offers. When Player B knows the location, they state it explicitly as a part of the dialogue.
Oblique offers imply information rather than explicitly stating it. They allow spects to be smart and infer elements of the story without spoon-feeding them every single detail.
Player A establishes a scene according to a predetermined scenario. After a few minutes of playing along, Player B takes the scene in a different direction than is written in the scenario. Player A follows where Player B leads.
When playing from an interactive script, hold the scenario lightly. The goal is still to play the spect’s story. When spects take the story in unexpected directions, go with them. This is known as off-roading.
