Whenever you feel yourself hesitate because of fear, think the words “3-2-1-Go!” and then GO! Don’t negotiate with yourself. Don’t try to figure things out. Do it before you have time to think otherwise. Treat fear like a starter’s pistol. When fear shows up, do what scares you immediately.

When spects change your point of view, it’s sometimes useful for them to see you go through the process. Here are the three steps.

Your work is not you. It’s tempting to feel good about yourself when you succeed. The problem is that you then feel awful about yourself when you fail. You can become more comfortable with failure by treating it as something outside of you. Here’s a process that may prove helpful when failure occurs.

to respond to an offer as though it were true

If you respond to an offer as though it’s true, that’s accepting the offer. You can accept offers verbally, physically, or both.

a character’s vulnerability that justifies change

Resisting others raises the stakes, but your character also needs to be changed. If spects have trouble changing you on their own, it helps to create an Achilles’ heel. Endow something that the spect says or does as your character’s secret weakness.

Exercises

Speak a one-minute monologue in an overly-dramatic fashion. (If you don’t have a monologue memorized, speak song lyrics that you know by heart.) Try to be interesting and clever. Then repeat the the words in a completely relaxed fashion, without acting at all.

The activity of a scene is comprised of various actions. For example, the activity of a picnic includes such actions as finding a good spot, laying out a blanket, unpacking the basket, and eating the food. Exploring the different actions keeps the activity alive without falling into the trap of repetition.

Exercises

A scene is played in which Player A follows Player B’s offers by doing physical actions.
