to provide the opportunity for spects to contribute

For spects to play as co-creators, you need to allow room. If you’re so busy making offers that there’s no room for spects to contribute, they become observers. Allow room for spects to say and do things.

When you have an idea that seems too obvious, use it. Trying to find something clever or interesting impedes the flow.

clarify what the spect doesn’t understand and hasn’t asked

Next to the fear of being judged, the biggest obstacle to spects’ ability to play is not understanding what’s going on. This is to be expected. Spects start off not knowing much about the story. They’re discovering it as they go along. If they don’t understand who someone is or what’s going on, it’s hard to play. It’s doubly-difficult when there’s no reason for their character to ask for clarification. To support spects, you need the ability to recognize and answer their unspoken questions.

Whoopee cushions are great. It’s fun to see people change when they sit down and the sound of a big juicy fart cuts loose. There’s something enjoyable about seeing people be altered. That’s also true in interactive performance. When spects realize that they can make you change, it makes them happy.

Allow spects to change your mind. Whatever causes the change becomes a reflection of one of your character’s priorities.

Too much tension impedes the flow of play. There are many aspects of interactive performance that can produce excess tension: fear of failure, trying too hard, angst about the past, uncertainty about the future.

If it feels like you can’t do something, don’t give up. Instead, double down. Commit to what you’re doing as though your capacities are far greater than even you have imagined. Greater commitment produces greater achievement.

let persistence change your mind

There’s more than one way to let someone change your mind. Sometimes it happens when presented with reasons. But spects don’t always offer good reasons. You can also endow others as having worn you down until you have to give up. Children are masters of this negotiation technique.
