 » Hot seat

A character is grilled by an interrogator about the character’s perspectives and details from the character’s life. Questions come hard and fast. Answers are given immediately without allowing time to think.

Variations

Solo – This exercise can be done as a solo exercise, with the player assuming the roles of the interrogator and the character. Questions can also come from the Gimme Getter.

Group – A group of characters are interviewed together. Focus is on the character being questioned, not interaction between the characters.

Notes

  • This is an excellent exercise for character development.
  • If the character doesn’t like an answer, they can change it.
  • If the character hesitates or thinks, the interrogator immediately demands a new answer.
  • When a new answer is demanded, the character gives it without resistance.
  • Questions may be about wildcards not found in the script. (E.g., “Tell us about the time you were in prison.”)
  • Keep the process fast and furious to avoid of thinking and release impulses.
  • Record and transcribe the interrogation to capture the ideas that are keepers. Free recording/transcription apps can be found at Transcription tools.
