Too much tension impedes the flow of play. There are many aspects of interactive performance that can produce excess tension: fear of failure, trying too hard, angst about the past, uncertainty about the future.
When tension arises, take a long, slow breath in and let it out equally slowly. Picture the breath moving into the part of the body that is tense. Not only does this release tension, it also oxygenates the brain creating mental clarity. Breath is a great way to regulate tension while playing.
