 » What happens next?

One or more players play a scene in which they ask the observers, “What happens next?” Someone tells them, then the players do that. Then the players ask what happens next again, the viewers tell them, and the players do that. This pattern continues until the scene is over.

Variations

Duo – Half of the viewers control one player, the other half control the other player.

Committee – A committee of four viewers each make a suggestion. The audience cheers for suggestions they like and groans for suggestions they don't. Who’s on the committee keeps switching throughout the story.

Bossy voice – Speaking in a bossy voice, players give themselves their own suggestions. This diminishes the inner critic.

Life savers – Players only ask what happens next if they get stuck.

Bad ideas – Players are given intentionally bad suggestions. See whether the ideas are actually bad or not.

Notes

  • The callers are responsible for the story, not the players.
  • This exercise gives players an outside perspective on how choices impact the scene.
  • Compare what player's thought should happen with what the audience wanted to see.
