Spect wrangler

the person responsible for the off-stage spect experience

The spect wrangler is a position unique to interactive performance. This person handles recruitment, communications, and hosting of spects for rehearsals and performances. Here is an overview of the responsibilities.

Before rehearsals, the spect wrangler recruits a diverse pool of rehearsal spects. When spects arrive, the spect wrangler welcomes them, sets them at ease, and lets them know what to expect. While each spect plays individually, the spect wrangler keeps the others company. When released from the rehearsal, the spect wrangler accompanies spects out. During notes, the spect wrangler communicates thoughts that spects shared before and after playing. The following day, thank-yous are sent to rehearsal spects for having played.

When a show moves into production, the spect wrangler continues to recruit and manage spects. Preparation involves setting up the play station where audience members can volunteer to participate. Recruitment materials are assembled, including the invitation to play, notice of filming, and a volunteer system. When the audience arrives, the spect wrangler hosts the play station, explaining how participation works and encouraging spect volunteer sign-ups. During the performance, the spect wrangler may be responsible for selecting the volunteers who are invited to play as spects. After the show, the spect wrangler coordinates with spects to get a cast photo, signed media releases, and testimonials. During the after action review with the cast and crew, the spect wrangler shares perspectives from the pre-show and post-show engagement with spects. The day after, follow-up thank-yous are sent to spects for having played.

The spect wrangler is one of the most important roles on the production team. This person serves as the primary connection point for spects, setting the tone and expectations for the entire interactive experience.
