Position

a character’s role as defined by relationship, profession, or occupation

One character can hold many positions. A character’s position can be defined by an occupation, a profession, a relationship, or something that the character happens to be doing.

Depending on the context, Malcolm is a husband, a father, a son, a lawyer, a veteran, an activist, and a golfer.

The position that matters most is the one relevant to the spect’s character.

Malcolm is spending time with his daughter, who is played by the spect. His position in this scene is that of a father.

Position alone doesn’t give you a character. You also need a point of view.

Though Malcolm is a tough, no-nonsense district attorney, whenever his daughter wants to have a dance party, he’s always up for it.

Combine a position with a point of view and you have a solid foundation for playing a character.
