Acting, no acting

Speak a one-minute monologue in an overly-dramatic fashion. (If you don’t have a monologue memorized, speak song lyrics that you know by heart.) Try to be interesting and clever. Then repeat the the words in a completely relaxed fashion, without acting at all.

Notes

  • Acting for interactive performance is like film acting. The less you “act,” the better it works.
  • Let others tell you what they saw when you weren’t trying to do anything. It’s an eye-opening experience to discover how much is communicated without needing to “act.”
  • Spects respond more authentically when they don’t feel like they’re being acted at.
