Endow the subtext

People are like icebergs. There’s often more that lies beneath the surface. When a scene feels flat, go beneath the surface and read more into it. Assume that something significant underlies what the other character has said or done, and respond to that. Even if there wasn’t an intended subtext, respond as though there were.

Sitting on the steps of the bed and breakfast where they’re staying, Coby (spect) and Kelsey have been carrying on an uninspired conversation about the weather. Coby comments, “It’s supposed to rain tomorrow.” With a sly grin, Kelsey replies, “ I guess we’ll just have to stay inside and find other ways to amuse ourselves, won’t we?”
