Focus on the present moment. Attend to what’s happening in the immediate location between the characters who are present. Keep the scene about what’s going on between you and those who are with you.
If you find yourself talking about events or people that are elsewhere, connect what you’re talking about with something present in the here and now.
Vinnie and Nazario are heatedly debating whose horse will win in an upcoming race. When Vinnie realizes how much they’ve just been talking about the future, he pulls a ring off his finger and waves it in Nazarrio’s face. “I’ll bet you my grandfather’s signet ring that my horse is faster than yours.”
