Contrarian spect

a difficult spect who resists or blocks almost every offer

Contrarians are few and far between, but you’ll come across them once in a while. They seem to go against every offer from every character. This behavior usually appears when inter-actors are trying to force the spect to do, think, or feel something. The resistance of the contrarian is an effort to maintain control and autonomy.

The best way to play with contrarians is to stop trying to make them do anything, and instead find out what they think and want. Be direct about your inquiry, then look for ways to support them. Agree with whatever point of view the contrarian takes.

You can connect with a contrarian by using contrasting. One character pushes back hard against the contrarian, then another character mirrors the contrarian’s attitude and point of view. The relief of finding someone on their side creates a strong connection that can lead to productive co-creation.
