Exercises

Two catchers stand at the far side of the room. With eyes closed, another player walks toward the catchers and is gently stopped before hitting the wall. The blind player opens eyes and takes the place of one of the catchers. The replaced catcher moves into the line of people who are waiting to cross the room.

Topics

Athletes, musicians, singers, and dancers all warm up. So do inter-actors. A warm-up prepares your mind and body before you practice alone, train with others, or perform with an audience.

Exercises

A player stands in the center of a circle of six to eight players. The center player crosses arms over the chest and closes eyes. The circle players put their palms up a few inches away from the center player. Keeping the body straight as a board, the center player falls in any direction. Circle players catch the center player, then gently pass the player back and forth around the circle. As trust grows, the circle players move farther away, allowing more room for the center player to fall. The process finishes with all circle players putting their hands on the center player who is set upright in the middle. Repeat for each player in the circle.

Exercises

Paired players face each other. One is the leader, the other the follower. The follower reflects the moves of the leader. After a while, they switch who leads and who follows.

Exercises

Facing a partner, players slap their legs and say "boom," then point in a direction (either up, down, left, or right) and say, "chhh." This pattern repeats until both players point in the same direction. At that point, they slap their legs on the next "boom," then point at each other and say "woo!" The players return to the boom-chhh pattern until they point in the same direction, which is again followed by a boom-woo sequence.

Exercises

Players work in pairs. The first player throws an energy pulse from a part of the body. The second player receives the energy with the same part of the body. The energy then travels to another part of the body and is thrown from there. The first player catches the energy in the corresponding body part. This energy exchange process continues.

Exercises

Two players become black knights, standing on one side of the room. The other players all become white knights and stand on the opposite side. The black knights call out, “Knights move!” The white knights all make a knight’s move—one step forward or back and two steps to either side, or two steps forward or back and one step to either side. Then the white knights call out, “Knights move!” and the black knights make their knight’s move. After making the move, black knights touch anyone within reach, turning them into black knights. This pattern repeats until white knights have reached the other side of the room or have been turned into black knights.
